High-protein diets such as Atkins, The Zone, Protein Power, and Sugar Busters, have one thing in common, as far as the American Heart Association (AHA) is concerned: they're not effective diets for weight loss and they may be downright dangerous.
Most high-protein diets emphasize consuming foods such as meat and eggs, which are rich in protein, but high in saturated fat. In addition, many high-protein plans limit carbohydrates such as whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and low-fat milk products. The AHA says that these diets don't provide essential nutrients, and people who follow them may be at risk for inadequate vitamin and mineral intake. In addition, too much protein in the diet can increase risk of health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, cancer, kidney and liver disorders, and osteoporosis. Fiber, necessary for digestive health, is another element lacking in high-protein diets, says the AHA.
Instead of using a high-protein program for weight loss, the AHA encourages people to eat a healthy diet that includes a variety of foods and that is rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. In addition, participating in regular physical activity and controlling portion sizes and calorie intake are better ways to achieve weight loss and health.
