About heart failure

About heart failure | Incidence | Types of heart failure | Causes

Heart failure occurs when the heart can't pump enough blood to meet the needs of the body. The condition usually develops slowly over years, as the heart gradually loses its pumping ability and works less efficiently. Some people may not become aware of their condition until symptoms appear years after the heart begins its decline.

The severity of the condition depends on how much pumping action the heart has lost. Almost everyone loses some pumping capacity as they age, but the loss is much more significant in heart failure.

How severe the condition is will determine how it affects a person's life. While mild heart failure may not significantly impact a person's daily life, severe heart failure can interfere with even simple activities. However, treatment combined with a healthy lifestyle can often help people lead full lives.
