Contraception and Pre-pregnancy Counseling

If an adolescent girl with diabetes becomes pregnant and her blood glucose levels are not well controlled, the chances of congenital malformations, spontaneous abortion and fetal death are greatly increased. Educating your daughter about this aspect of diabetes is critically important.

Sexually active adolescents should be advised on contraceptive methods.

Women with diabetes should take special care to get their diabetes under control before contemplating a planned pregnancy. Pregnancy with good health and good glucose control carries some risks, but they are generally not greater than those in the general population.
