Glucose Monitoring |
People with diabetes must be ready to deal with hypoglycemia episodes at any time. That means carrying ready sources of glucose with you. You should immediately ingest 15 grams of carbohydrate. Test your blood glucose again in 15 minutes; if it is still below 70 mg/dL, eat another 15 grams of carbohydrate. Besides juice (1/2 cup), honey (1-2 teaspoons), hard candy (5-6 pieces), and other sources of fast-acting carbohydrate, there are products developed specifically to meet this need. To be especially safe, many patients carry or wear special medical identification products that alert emergency personnel to their condition. If low blood sugar is mistaken for drunkenness, needed treatment won't be provided. People at risk for severe hypoglycemic reactions may want to have injectable glucagon on hand. In a severe episode, they may lose consciousness or be unable to swallow juice; a family member, co-worker or friend should know how to administer it.
