Your Fitness Program Reality Check: Access and Performance

We've talked about setting up an exercise program that suits your own personal needs and goals. There are 2 more important considerations to help assure your success: access and performance. For specific activities you are considering, ask yourself these questions:

Access

  • Does it require special facilities? Are they available to me?
  • Does it require special equipment? Is it available and affordable?
  • Does it require special training or instruction? Is this instruction readily available, i.e., at convenient times, easy to get to, affordable?
  • Is it seasonal? What can I do at other times of the year?

Performance

  • Does it suit my physical characteristics?
  • Can I realistically integrate it into my current lifestyle?
  • Can I afford any costs associated with it?
  • Do I have a good support network if needed for the activity?

Next week we'll look at factors that can help you maintain your commitment to your exercise program.
