Association Boosts Fitness for People with Diabetes

Phoenix-based International Diabetic Athletic Association (IDAA) helps athletes and others with diabetes to balance the food, exercise, and insulin needs of a fitness program. Started in 1985 by a marathoner who wanted to help athletes like herself, the group has about 2,000 members worldwide, ranging from elite athletes to moderately active individuals.

For serious athletes with diabetes, the association has organized events such as bicycle trips across America and climbing Mt. Everest. For others, the organization works on a local level to link people with similar interests and help members find an exercise companion. The IDAA member newsletter passes on helpful tips and useful information from other members.

IDAA has chapters in 13 states. Call 1-800-898-IDAA for more information.
