The Potential Hazards of Unexpected Delays

Most people get annoyed when they run into unexpected delays. But such delays can actually create serious problems for people with diabetes.

An article that appeared in professional publications for optometrists and eye surgeons advises them to know which of their patients has diabetes and to make every effort to see them promptly. That's because unexpected delays can interrupt your eating or medication schedule and may cause hypoglycemia. Also, stress can release substances that enhance the effect of glucose-lowering medications, which may also lead to hypoglycemia.

You should always carry glucose tablets with you in case of such emergencies. But you should also alert the receptionist when you check in - for ANY kind of appointment - that you have diabetes and need to be seen promptly in order to maintain your blood glucose control.
