Safety Tips for Hiking and Camping

Now that warm weather has arrived, there are many enjoyable ways to get out and get some exercise. Hiking and camping are two favorites. You may want to check with your doctor to make sure it's OK for you to take part in these activities, and then observe a few common-sense safety precautions. Here's what the American Red Cross recommends:

  • Review the skills that you'll need - you may need to know how to read a compass, erect a temporary shelter and give first aid.
  • It's safest to hike or camp with at least one companion. If you'll be in a remote area, it's best to have a group of four; that way, if one person is injured, one can stay with him/her while two others go for help.
  • If you'll be hiking or camping in an unfamiliar area, talk to people who know the area.
  • Consider what emergencies could arise and how you would deal with them. What if you get lost or are unexpectedly confronted by an animal? What if someone becomes ill or injured? What kind of weather might you encounter?
  • Pack emergency signaling devices, and find out the location of the nearest telephone or ranger station.
  • Check out what rules are in effect ahead of time; for example, some areas prohibit campfires in high-fire-risk areas.
  • Get permits where required. If an area is closed, do not go there.
  • Leave a copy of your itinerary with someone, including when you plan to return.

Make sure you have the right equipment and needed supplies. Of course, make sure you take a full supply of your diabetes medication and supplies, including products to treat hypo- or hyperglycemia. Test your blood sugar frequently, especially if you're not accustomed to exercise.

The Red Cross also suggests assembling a "survival pack" for each hiker. In a small waterproof container, place a pocketknife, compass, whistle, space blanket, nylon filament, water purification tablets, matches and candle. With these items, the chances of surviving in the wild are greatly improved.
