New Subcutaneous Glucose Sensor Passes Test

A new Italian device measures blood glucose continuously through a fiber that is inserted under the skin in the abdomen. In recent tests, it was found to be accurate and reliable.

The device, called Glucoday, was tested in 70 people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Readings from the device were compared to venous blood glucose measurements, and the reported values "closely agreed." Insertion of the fiber and wearing of the device were well tolerated by the patients.

The researchers concluded that the Glucoday is a "relatively easy method" to monitor glucose in diabetic patients. The device is not yet available in the US.
