Get the Most from Your Medications

It is not unusual for people with diabetes to be taking a number of prescription medications. Here are some ways to help you get the most from your medications and minimize any problems:

  • Tell all of your healthcare providers, including your pharmacist, exactly what prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you take.
  • Read about the side effects on the patient information sheet that comes with your medications. Keep the sheets to refer to as long as you are taking that drug.
  • Be certain what each drug is for.
  • Be sure you understand when and how you are supposed to take each drug.
  • Keep a list of your medications and dosages handy in case you have to go to the hospital or emergency room.
  • Try to purchase all of your medications at one pharmacy, where the pharmacist can use computer systems to check for drug interactions.
  • If you switch to a different pharmacy, take your other pill bottles with you so that the new pharmacist can screen for interactions.
  • Don't stop taking any drug suddenly without consulting your doctor. Doing so can be dangerous.
