How To Stretch Your Rx Dollar
|
There's been a lot of talk from politicians about the high cost of prescription drugs. If you do not have prescription drug coverage in your insurance or health plan, there are some things you can do to make your money go further:
- Ask for a generic equivalent.
- Ask your doctor for free drug samples. This is especially helpful when trying a new prescription.
- Call around to local pharmacies for the lowest price. Pharmacy prices can vary greatly. If you find a drug cheaper elsewhere, ask your regular pharmacist if he/she will match the price.
- Check out mail-order pharmacies. These are best used for long-term drug therapy, since it can take a while for delivery. But the costs are generally lower, and you can't beat the convenience.
- If you are a senior citizen, ask your pharmacist for a senior discount.
- Call your local chapter of AARP and local disease-related organizations (for diabetes, arthritis, etc.). They may have drugs available at discount prices.
- For over-the-counter products, buy the store brand or a discount brand.
