Medication Tips for Older Adults

Studies have shown that between 40% and 75% of older adults don't take their medications at the right time or in the right amount. About one in four people admitted to nursing homes are there at least partly because they couldn't take their medication correctly.

The most important thing is to understand what the drug is for and when you should take it. If you are having difficulties with your prescription drugs, here are some tips to help make it easier:

  • If you have arthritis, ask your pharmacist for an oversized bottle and easy-open cap.
  • If your vision is not good, ask for large-type labels. If they're not available, use a magnifying glass and be sure to read labels under bright light.
  • Read the label each time you take the drug to prevent mistakes and reinforce the directions.
  • Ask for the simplest dosage schedule - once or twice a day, if possible.

  • If you're having trouble remembering to take your medications, or whether you've taken them, you need a system to remember them:
    • Devise a plan that fits your daily schedule.
    • Use mealtimes or bedtime as cues.
    • Special pill boxes are available at your pharmacy to help you sort the medications you take regularly.
