Make Sure You Understand Your Medications

Your pharmacist should be a trusted advisor for all of your prescriptions. It is critically important that you fully understand what medications you are taking, including why you are taking them, how you should take them, and what you can expect.

Following are a series of questions that the National Professional Society of Pharmacists suggested all patients should ask their pharmacist:

  1. What is the name of the medication, and what is it supposed to do?
  2. When and how do I take it?
  3. How long should I take it?
  4. Does this medication contain anything that can cause an allergic reaction?
  5. Should I avoid alcohol, any other medications, foods, or activities while I'm taking this drug?
  6. Should I expect any side effects?
  7. Is there is generic version of the medication my doctor has prescribed?
  8. What if I forget to take my medication?
  9. Is it safe to become pregnant or to breastfeed while taking this medication?
  10. How should I store my medications?

Print this out and take it with you every time you fill a prescription. The more you know, the better you'll feel.
