Smart Eating Can Lower Cholesterol - Part 2

Last week we looked at fruits and vegetables that can help balance the cholesterol in your body. This week, we'll list some fish and nuts, which contain healthy fats that can help lower LDL levels and balance your overall cholesterol reading.

  • Fatty fish - Cold-water fish such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel contain omega-3 fatty acids that may help decrease LDL cholesterol. On the other hand, whitefish such as haddock, flounder, and sole contain only a small amount of this helpful substance.

  • Nuts and seeds - Pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, walnuts, and almonds get much of their fat from monounsaturates, the type that helps lower overall cholesterol levels while preserving the good cholesterol, HDL. Eat these in moderation, however, to keep your fat intake at modest levels.

Oats and whole grains are good sources of soluble fiber, which helps to lower both total and LDL cholesterol. We'll look at fiber in more detail next week.
