Captopril Renal Scan (Renogram)

Captopril is a blood pressure lowering medication which has a specific effect on kidney function. In normal kidneys it produces a slight increase in the rate of urine formation, but in kidneys with a blocked artery it decreases it. The captopril scan makes use of this phenomenon, and is sometimes performed by comparing two kidney scans, one done before and one after captopril is given (typically one hour after a single dose). If there is a blocked artery, the second scan show a deterioration of function in the affected kidney in when compared with the first scan. More commonly, a single scan is done after taking the captopril.
