Tips for SAFE Exercising

Increasing exercise is of great benefit - but it risks injury as well. Here are some tips for preventing injury:

  • Always wear appropriate safety gear - a bike helmet if you're bicycling, protective pads if you're skating, etc.
  • Wear the appropriate shoes for each sport you participate in. Warm up before you exercise - through a moderate exercise such as walking while swinging your arms.
  • Follow the 10% rule - don't increase your program (such as walking or running distance, or the amount of weight lifted) more than 10 percent a week.
  • Avoid doing the exact same routine 2 days in a row. Changing your routine avoids boredom and also works different muscles.
  • When working out with exercise equipment, read the instructions carefully and ask someone qualified to help you if needed. Check treadmills and other equipment to make sure they're working properly.
  • If you're new to weight training, be sure to get proper information before you begin.
  • Stop exercising if you experience severe pain or swelling. Any discomfort that persists should be evaluated.
