Help Yourself -- to a Piece of Fruit!
|
We all know we're supposed to eat more fruits and vegetables, so why don't we? Here are some tips to make it easier to do what you know you should do:
- When you do your marketing, buy many kinds of fruits and vegetables, so you have plenty of choices.
- Buy frozen and canned as well as fresh fruits and vegetables (but watch out for sodium in some canned veggies).
- Use the fruits and vegetables that will spoil quickly first -- the peaches and asparagus. Save the hardier ones, like apples and acorn squash, for later in your week.
- Take advantage of stores' salad bars and buy cut-up fruits and vegetables --especially if you don't seem to find the time to cut up the ones you buy whole.
- Keep a fruit bowl or small packs of applesauce, raisins, or other dried fruit on the kitchen counter or in your office.
- Pack a piece of fruit or some cut-up vegetables in your briefcase or backpack; carry moist towlettes for easy cleanup.
- Add fruit to breakfast by drinking 6 oz. of 100% fruit juice or by having fruit on your cereal.
- Add fruit to lunch or dinner via a special fruit dessert, such as a fruit parfait with low-fat yogurt or sherbet topped with berries.
- Use vegetables in new ways, especially in soups, sauces, and casseroles; for example, grate zucchini and carrots into spaghetti sauce.
- Serve larger portions of fruits and vegetables.
