The Food and Drug Administration has issued another warning about the use of dietary supplements containing tiratricol, also known as TRIAC. This ingredient is a potent thyroid hormone that can cause serious health consequences, including heart attack or stroke. Side effects include insomnia, nervousness, sweating, and diarrhea.
In spite of 4 recalls over the past year, various products containing this ingredient may still be available - or on your shelves. The names of those recalled include:
- Triax Metabolic Accelerator, from Syntrax Innovations, Inc., Cape Girardeau, MO
- Tricana Metabolic Hormone Analogue, from J.N.G. Sports Supplement Distributors, Bloomsburg, PA, and Thermo-Life International, San Carlos, CA
- Tria-Cutz, Thyroid Stimulator, Dietary Supplement, from Gentech LLC, Edison, NJ
- Sci-Fi-Tri-Cuts Dietary Supplement, from ATF Fitness Products, Inc., Oakmont, PA
They were sold mainly through health food stores, fitness centers, and gyms, and also via the Internet. The FDA urges that use of such products be stopped immediately.
