Swim Safely

Swimming is one of the best activities for cardiovascular health and overall fitness. The American Red Cross offers these tips for water safety:

  • If you don't know how to swim, learn. The Red Cross offers classes for people of any age and level of ability.
  • Always swim with a buddy, - not alone.
  • Swim in supervised areas only.
  • Don't mix alcohol and swimming. Alcohol impairs your judgment, balance and coordination. It also reduces your body's ability to stay warm.
  • Pay attention to local weather conditions and forecasts. Stop swimming at the first indication of bad weather.
  • If you have your own pool, post CPR instructions in the pool area, and keep a cordless phone handy for use in an emergency.
  • Keep basic lifesaving equipment by the pool, including a pole, rope and personal flotation devices. Know how to use them.
