Should I take estrogens after the menopause if I have high blood pressure?

Most doctors do not routinely prescribe HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) for women who have high blood pressure, but this may change in the near future as more information becomes available. Most doctors would agree with the following advice: HRT after the menopause is not justifiable on a routine basis at the present time.

If you are at high risk for heart disease (for example if you have high blood pressure and high blood lipids), HRT would probably lower your risk. The decision to start HRT is best made in liaison with your gynecologist.

If you've had a hysterectomy, there's no need to take progestins as well as estrogens.

If you've had breast cancer, or if it runs in your family, you should probably not take HRT.
