Indoor Fitness Program Available from NIH

If you're hibernating during the winter, you can lose stamina, strength, and flexibility -- especially if you're over 50. Now you can stay fit while you stay warm, with the National Institute on Aging's at-home exercise program.

"Exercise with the National Institute on Aging" is a 48-minute video that is based on medical research. It has been "road-tested" by scores of older Americans. The program emphasizes these exercises:

  • Endurance exercises, which increase stamina and may help delay or prevent chronic conditions such as heart disease and diabetes.
  • Strength exercises, which increase metabolism to help control weight and regulate blood sugar.
  • Flexibility exercises, which may help prevent injuries or aid in recovering from them.
  • Balance exercises, which help prevent falls.

You can get the exercise book and video for just $7; call 800-222-2225 for details or visit the NIA's web site at www.nia.nih.gov.
