Tips for Healthy Holiday Eating

At this time of year, it's important to develop strategies to help you avoid the extra pounds that are frequently unwanted "gifts" for the holidays. First of all, remember that it is OK to enjoy food. Here are some healthy habits that will serve you well over the holidays - and other times, too.

  • Learn to avoid extremes in eating. Wait until you are hungry before you eat.
  • Include holiday foods in your meals and meal planning.
  • Eat all foods in moderation.
  • Try to think of a holiday as any other day of eating. Make wise choices, and be sure to include your exercise regimen.
  • Don't deny your sweet tooth; allow yourself a small treat occasionally.
  • Be choosey. Select food items at parties that you rarely have or are only available during the holidays.
  • Bypass the booze. Drinks are high in calories and have few nutrients.

Be realistic - this is not a good time to try to lose weight. Instead, challenge yourself not to gain.
