Be Prepared If Heart Attack Should Strike

Since people with high blood pressure are at increased risk of heart attack, it's important that you and your family discuss the possibility and be prepared for it. We've reviewed the symptoms and what to expect when you get to the ER. Another step you can take is to have a plan of action ready - it can save time and might save your life.

  • Learn the warning signs of a heart attack. (Click here to review.)
  • Talk to your doctor about your risk and what you can do to reduce it.
  • Talk with your family, friends and coworkers about the heart attack warning signs and the importance of acting quickly.
  • Discuss the benefits of calling 911 instead of driving to the hospital:
    • It is the fastest way to get there.
    • Paramedics can begin treatment immediately if needed.
    • If your heart stops beating, emergency personnel have the equipment to restart it.
    • Heart attack patients who arrive by ambulance tend to receive faster treatment upon arrival at the hospital.
