Create Your Own Incentive Program

We all know that we should get more exercise. But many of us need an extra push to actually do it. The American Heart Association suggests creating your own incentive program:

  • Reward yourself for every half hour spent exercising and every pound lost with points toward an indulgence such as a massage or an evening at the movies.
  • If you are motivated by money, drop a dime in a jar for every minute you spend exercising. At the end of the month, use the money for something frivolous.
  • If your blood pressure is driving your exercise program, keep a chart of your BP readings and reward yourself when you succeed in reducing it - or keeping it in your target range for a week at a time.
